Bioluminescent animals make their own light to survive.

A firefly lights up the night sky, a foxfire mushroom sets the forest floor aglow and sea butterflies shine like beacons deep in the ocean. These glowing species are one of the most spectacular wonders of the natural world, and they are found on land, in the air and in the depths of the ocean.

In Living Light, discover how and why bioluminescent creatures glow, and what that special ability can tell scientists about how diseases such as cancer and malaria spread in humans. These light makers are facing threats from the effects of climate change, pollution and loss of habitat, and they need our protection. Young readers will learn how they can shine a light on bioluminescent species and use citizen science to conserve their habitats and keep these creatures glowing into the future.

Aitken spotlights bioluminescence in the natural world. This survey of bioluminescence among plants and animals explains the phenomenon, describes research in the field (including ways that recently isolated bioluminescent genes support research in other areas), and discusses conservation issues. Bioluminescent animals use light to communicate, reproduce, and feed and defend themselves. Descriptions and photographs of these animals provide some of the most dramatic content of this information-packed title. Readers without some science background may get bogged down in the third chapter's details about DNA and proteins, whose discoveries have led to scientific breakthroughs. But those who persevere will be rewarded by extensive examples of luminous animals and plants and heartened to learn how many diseases the use of green fluorescent protein is helping to cure. A final chapter describes threats, bioluminescent organisms used in art and fashion, and what readers themselves can do to support these intriguing creatures; Aitken quotes an ocean explorer who has built "Eye-in-the-Sea," a new stealth camera system, to discover more such creatures. The author occasionally personalizes the narrative by inserting his own experience as a biologist. Though the text is broken up by colorful and clearly captioned and sourced illustrations, subheadings, and text boxes, this is still a challenging read, yet one well worth the effort. The few humans represented have a range of skin tones. Shines new light on light-making organisms. (glossary, index)(Nonfiction. 10-15)

Gr 6 Up-Bioluminescence refers to plants and animals that create their own light using chemicals or bacteria. Aitken shares some of the remarkable plants and animals that create their own light and how they have allowed scientists to see and do things in new ways. Using both expository and narrative text, the author provides a glimpse into the glorious natural world of fireflies, jellyfish, and plankton. Aitken, sharing personal experiences, offers just the right amount of accessibility in this remarkable book. Gorgeous photographs, nicely arranged sidebars, and well-defined terms make the book very attractive as well as informative. Complex processes and concepts are explained thoroughly but do require background knowledge related to chemistry and biology. Issues related to scientific ethics are presented in the chapters on how scientists are using knowledge of bioluminescence to develop new technology for both research and consumer purposes. VERDICT A great resource for readers with enough background knowledge to truly understand the material.-Heidi Grange

Grades 4-7 There she glows! In this detailed offering, Aitken weaves personal experiences into scientific research on the role of bioluminescence in plants and animals. From the common firefly to amazing strings of sticky, glowing mucus made by gnat larvae in New Zealand's caves, opening chapters examine the evolutionary role of bioluminescence in a variety of plants and animals, particularly for mating, luring prey, and avoiding predators. Other chapters provide a more in-depth look at bioluminescence among flora and fauna on land and in the ocean. Equally fascinating are chapters on scientific studies of bioluminescence, including food production, reducing fossil fuel production, and fighting diseases. In each case, key and potentially difficult terms are presented in bold typeface and explained within the text, while sidebars present related information and additional intriguing facts. Readers can also see many of the dazzling, bioluminescent creatures introduced throughout in high-quality photos. A final chapter focuses on protecting these fragile beings, such as by ending deep-sea mining and creating bioluminescent art. Enlightening, indeed!
