Aly’s adventure continues. . . . No longer a slave, Alanna’s daughter is now spying as part of an underground rebellion against the colonial rulers of the Copper Isles. The people in the rebellion believe that a prophecy in which a new queen will rise up to take the throne is about to be realized. Aly is busy keeping the potential teenage queen and her younger siblings safe, while also keeping her in the dark about her future. But Aly, who is usually adept at anticipating danger and changes, is in for a few nasty surprises.

Pierce weaves yet another vibrant fantasy in which listeners get espionage, war strategy, and royal politics. Aly Homewood continues to plot with the Copper Isles natives to place a "raka queen" on the throne. Pierce's story is intelligent in its details of revolution, beautiful in its descriptions of exotic places and people, and emotionally charged in its tragedies and triumphs. Happily, this book gets the narrator it needs in Trini Alvarado, who provides an extensive range of expression for both males and females, human or immortal, friend or foe. Her clear speech and judicious pace guide listeners through multiple intrigues to a satisfying end. A gem. J.M.S. (c) AudioFile 2005, Portland, Maine

Gr 7-10 -The fantasy world filled with gods, spells, small spying creatures called darkings, and winged horses is brought to life by Tamora Pierce (Random, 2004). All is not glorious as the oppressed raka people turn against the luarin rulers in a violent battle. The story opened in "Trickster's Choice" (Aug. 2003, p. 78) when 17-year-old Alianne began her service as maid to the Balitang family. What they don't realize is that she is a talented spy and is there to instigate unrest and rebellion among the raka so that a Balitang daughter will become queen and bring peace to the troubled land. Trini Alvarado reads quickly and the story moves at a nice pace. Her voice is normally soft, almost gentle, but can be harsh and strong to show anger or jealousy. Although she doesn't differentiate between each of the numerous characters, she does change to a nasal voice for the raka and a treble for the luarians. An entertaining, satisfying listening experience for those who enjoy fantasy and adventure filled with exciting plot twists. -"Claudia Moore, W.T. Woodson High School, Fairfax, VA"
