The cow jangles her bell. “Moo, moo,” says the cow. “I am very hungry.” But where is Farmer Jones?
Published 50 years ago, this simple, satisfying story is illustrated in Richard Scarry’s early, more painterly style.

Richard Scarry's 1942 book The Animals of Farmer Jones now appears as a paper-over-board Big Little Golden Book. This classic introduction to farm animals spotlights their familiar barnyard noises, impatient appetites and the kind of food they finally do eat. Scarry's lovingly pastoral scenes add to the overall retro charm. -

One by one, the hungry farm animals wait for Farmer Jones to bring them supper; and he does, one at a time. Successive double-page spreads showcase each animal, while the text provides the appropriate animal noises-a must for toddlers. Timelessly simple (a far cry from Scarry's later work) and effective (though Mrs. Jones in her apron does date the book a bit).(Copyright 2004 by The Horn Book, Incorporated, Boston.
