John Lewis knew that treating someone differently because of the color of their skin was unfair and wrong. In his early 20s, he decided to do something about it. During the struggle for equal treatment, Lewis faced many beatings and was arrested around 40 times. But he would become one of the most influential leaders in the civil rights movement. He continues that work today.

From nonviolent protests where leaders walked in dissent to voicing one's beliefs through the written word, our modern worldview has been shaped by their actions. More than just life narratives, this series provides a reflection of history. Maps, schematics, historical sketches, and paintings convey their unique stories. With the exception of Tecumseh, for whom no photographic evidence exists, vintage and modern photographs combine with effective, concise writing that often addresses some heavy themes. The appealing layout contains supplemental information found in text boxes. New vocabulary is defined both on the page it occurs and in the appended glossary. Critical thinking questions are included in the back matter as well. VERDICT Great for middle grade collections and to prompt discourse while teaching civil rights units.
