Grades 7-10 Though it opens with a Louisiana slave revolt in 1811, this volume primarily looks at the legacy of slavery in America since the Civil War: prejudiced assumptions, discriminatory practices, unjust laws, and violence against African Americans. Citing many examples, Harris reviews the history of racism (sometimes deliberate, sometimes unintentional) and its role in the attitudes of white Americans over the last 155 years, despite strides made during the civil rights era and, decades later, the election of a Black president. Archival photos, paintings, and prints illustrate the text, along with color photos of contemporary people and events. Frequent sidebars focus on particular events and issues in African American history. From the Slavery in America series (4 titles), this well-reasoned historical account discusses the roots and the persistence of racial prejudice.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
