This survey of research on what bothers us and why is mostly enjoyable and sometimes enlightening--but occasionally unconvincing. Authors Palca and Lichtman, both of NPR's "Science Friday," divide the reading, though without rhyme or reason--a criterion, according to this book, of what is annoying. Although Palca's voice is likable, his reading is at times a bit faltering and unsure. Lichtman sounds more energetic and confident; however, sometimes she reads too quickly. Her voice is strong, clear, and expressive but has a nasal quality, some pronunciation quirks (very hard "r's"), and a slightly strident edge. This is light but interesting science for those who can overlook the minor deficiencies. W.M. (c) AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
