School Library Journal
September 1, 2005
Gr 5-9 -An overview of two complicated and controversial figures whose personal affairs, political ideas and affiliations, and artworks were out of the mainstream, even radical. The narrative does not skirt these issues, but it does downplay them and presents them in a positive manner. The painters' seriousness is sometimes missed, and their fervent passion is not always apparent in this dual biography. Sabbeth gives historical and cultural background, which is necessary in understanding the artists and their works; however, it takes over some chapters, leaving little space for the biographical information. The pages are colorfully designed with bright borders at the tops of the pages, colored sidebars, and appropriately placed photos and reproductions, including works by both artists. The 24 related activities range from artwork to cultural projects. They will appeal primarily to the younger readers in the suggested reading range." -Carolyn Janssen, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH"Copyright 2005 School Library Journal, LLC Used with permission.
