Doctor Dolittle, a little, lovable old doctor, had so many animal pets spread throughout his house and garden that patients would not come to him anymore. As a result, he became poorer and poorer.

But Doctor Dolittle occupied nearly all of his time tending to his pets, and his fame as an animal doctor spread all over the world. When the monkeys in Africa were stricken with an epidemic, they gave the good doctor a call. He set sail at once.

The adventures during his magnificent journey across the ocean, through the high kingdom of the Jolliginki and back again by way of the Canaries, combine to form a story filled with delight.

An enduring classic, it will dazzle and delight readers young and old.

Nadia May has a great time hooting, greeting, barking and grunting through this kick-off book in the famous children's series. Her distinctive British intonations fit in perfectly with the settings and premises of Hugh Lofting's tale of an English country doctor who develops the ability to speak with animals in their own languages. May attempts to give each animal its species-specific voice, and she succeeds with enthusiasm, levity and gaiety. One can picture a circle of eager, young faces drinking in this incredible and colorful tale. D.W. Winner of AUDIOFILE Earphones Award (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine

Opening with jaunty music, this story of the good Doctor Dolittle's fascinating and magical adventures will charm kids 9 and up. It's truly amazing how a single reader can portray a female, several animal voices and a few male parts, as well. Some of the parts stretch Bennett a bit. His rendition of Polynesia the parrot is annoyingly screechy and high. He does his best reading for the middle-aged characters, as in his portrayal of Dolittle and his sister, Sara. The hoity-toity lion is well portrayed also. A.G.H. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
