این منظومه، داستان عشق خسرو پرویز پادشاه بزرگ شاهنشاهی ساسانی و شاهزاده ارمنی، شیرین، که بعدها ملکه‌ی ارمنستان می‌شود را روایت می‌کند. این داستان را به غیر از نظامی، فردوسی در شاهنامه و شاعران دیگر هم آورده‌اند و نسخه‌های مختلفی از آن با عنوان‌های «شیرین و فرهاد» هم موجود است.
