“As fun and frothy as a Britney concert mashed up with a musical comedy . . . warm, engrossing, and satisfying in every way.”—Entertainment Weekly

From the bestselling author of Funny You Should Ask comes “a pitch-perfect second chance romance with off-the-charts tension and chemistry” (Carley Fortune, author of Every Summer After).

A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: Entertainment Weekly, NPR, PopSugar

Then. Katee Rose is living the dream as America’s number one pop star, caught in a whirlwind of sold-out concerts, screaming fans, and constant tabloid coverage. Everyone wants to know everything about her and her boyfriend, Ryan LaNeve, the hottest member of adored boy band CrushZone. Katee loves to perform but hates the impossible demands of stardom. Maybe that’s why she finds herself in the arms of another CrushZone member, Cal Kirby. Quiet, serious Cal, who’s always been a good friend to Katee, is suddenly Cal with the smoldering eyes and very good hands. One unforgettable night is all it takes to blow up Katee’s relationship with Ryan, her career, her whole life.
Now. Kathleen Rosenberg is okay with her ordinary existence and leaving her pop star image in the past. That is, until Cal Kirby shows up with the opportunity of her dreams—a starring role in the Broadway show he’s directing and a chance to perform, the way she’s always wanted. The two haven’t spoken since the joint destruction of their careers, and each of them blames the other, making their reunion a tense battle of wits and egos. Kathleen reluctantly agrees to the musical, as long as she keeps her guard up around Cal. But rehearsals are long, those eyes still smolder, and those hands are still very good. Despite everything, Kathleen can’t deny the chemistry between them. Is it ever a good idea to reignite old flames? Especially if you’ve been burned in the past?

Sussman (Funny You Should Ask) dazzles in this smart second-chance romance. The artist formerly known as Katee Rose—now Kathleen Rosenberg—gets a second chance at her Broadway dreams 10 years after her music career was torpedoed by her vengeful ex-boyfriend, Ryan. Her best friend, songwriter Harriet Watson, has written a part specifically for Kathleen in her new 1940s-set musical. There’s just one problem: the director is Cal Kirby, who was in a popular boy band with Ryan and whom Kathleen has been crushing on since their theater camp days. The press has painted Kathleen as a man-eating “slut” ever since Ryan leaked news that Kathleen cheated on him—but no one knows that she cheated with Cal. In the fallout, Cal stayed far away, and Kathleen struggled to rebuild her life. But when they’re forced to work together, old feelings reignite. Sussman skillfully toggles between flashbacks and the present, teasing out her characters’ fraught backstories. Her leads are complex, appealing, and multilayered, and the perfectly paced plot offers real insight into celebrity culture and media slut-shaming. Sussman’s first-rate latest will please her existing fans and win her many new ones. Agent: Elizabeth Bewley, Sterling Lord Literistic.

Jamie Lamchick narrates a second-chance romance between two former pop stars. Kathleen Rosenberg, formerly the superstar Katee Rose, wants to perform the Broadway role that was literally written for her, but the show is being directed by the cause of her downfall. Lamchick creates a generally relatable persona for Kathleen, making her desire to succeed on her own merits, rather than on the coattails of her past, entirely believable. Frequent flashbacks give Lamchick the opportunity to portray Kathleen at different points in her life and career. While Lamchick's wry delivery can make some of the more emotional moments fall slightly short, overall it's a good match for the audiobook's sly humor. K.M.P. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Katee Rose went from popstar to pariah overnight when she cheated on her boy band boyfriend, Ryan, with his bandmate Cal. Never mind that Cal and Katee had a real connection, while Ryan was just seeking the glow from her spotlight; the drama destroyed her career. Decades later, and back to being Kathleen Rosenberg, she has another chance to shine in the Broadway show of her dreams; the only problem is that Cal, the director of her downfall, is also directing the musical. As they struggle to put aside the past, they realize this may be a curtain call for their lost love. Sussman (Funny You Should Ask) crafts a compelling contemporary romance. The dual timeline allows listeners to fall in love with the complex characters as they fall in love with each other. Narrator Jaime Lamchick gives a playful, passionate performance. Her expressiveness fills the fast-paced, first-person narrative and yields an engaging listening experience. VERDICT This audio will appeal to listeners seeking a steamy pop-star rom-com about celebrity and second chances. Recommended for fans of Olivia Dade, Emily Henry, and Katherine Center.--Lauren Hackert
