Another great book in the "50 Hikes with Kids" series, focusing on Utah and Nevada. This one is also written by global education consultant Gorton (50 Hikes with Kids: Texas), but this time her coauthor is avid hiker/biker/backpacker Terry. The book is divided into two main parts--one for each of the neighboring states--that feature charts breaking down the adventures by length, nearest main city (or "hub"), difficulty (easy, moderate, challenging), and elevation. Additional lists note the hikes' special features, such as waterfalls, caves, campgrounds, and the best trails by season. A noteworthy section advises readers about recommended supplies, navigation tips, and the most family-friendly feature: "power-up stations," which are places along the trails to stop to eat, hydrate, and rest. This book also goes into great detail about the hikes themselves and provides maps, background or historical information, scavenger-hunt ideas, fee information and even nearby places to get treats such as milkshakes, French toast, and hot chocolate. VERDICT A kid-friendly guide to hiking and adventures, filled with plenty of considerate, observant tips.--Whitney Bates-Gomez
