SPORK • Spork became the official name for the scoopy-stabby plastic utensil when the Van Brode Milling Co. got a patent for it in 1970, the same year Merriam-Webster added this portmanteau—a word that blends sounds and meanings—to the dictionary (page 10). Victorians had a special tined spoon just for ice cream, whereas the spork aims for a bare-bones practicality that befits fast-food takeout bags. Other tableware inventions, with words to match, are the Splayd (spoon, fork and knife) and the Chork (chopsticks and fork).
Diana Ross b. 1944 • Diana Ross started her career in 1961 as one of the Supremes, a new Motown trio. By the end of the decade, it was the most successful vocal group in U.S. history—but the spotlight always shone brightest on the charismatic frontwoman with the sweet, sultry voice. After the release of her self-titled solo LP in 1970, Ross landed a staggering 40 songs on the Billboard charts over the next two decades, and made her mark as an actor. Sixty years after her girl-group debut, Ross still reigns supreme.
