NEW YORK TIMES EDITOR'S PICK Two best friends. One huge crush. A year that could change everything...

A warmhearted, hilarious queer rom-com about what happens when a group of friends are actually brave enough to live the dream and give up their dreary city apartments to buy a house in the country together. “Real Emily Henry vibes but gay. Joyous, funny, sexy, and romantic—a triumph!”—Kate Sawyer, award-winning author of The Stranding

“Buoyant, charming, delectably wistful, and quietly earnest—not to mention, British enough to beguile even the subset of Americans who cuddle up to The Great British Bake Off on a Sunday afternoon.” —Casey McQuiston, The New York Times

"A delightful romance, complete with DIY home repair, a beautiful queer found family, and backyard hen.” —Ashley Herring Blake, bestselling author of Astrid Parker Doesn’t Fail
El is in a rut. She’s been hiding in the photocopier room at the same dead-end job for longer than she cares to remember, she’s sharing a flat with a girl who leaves passive-aggressive smiley face notes on the fridge about milk consumption and, worst of all, she’s been in unrequited love with her best friend, effortlessly cool lesbian Ray, for years. So when a plan is hatched for El, Ray, and their two other closest friends—newly heartbroken Will and karaoke-and-Twilight-superfan Jamie—to ditch the big city and move out to a ramshackle house on the edge of an English country village, it feels like just the escape she needs.
Despite being the DIY challenge of a lifetime, the newly named Lavender House has all the makings of becoming the queer commune of the friends' dreams. (Will has been given a pass as the gang's Token Straight.) But as they start plotting their bright new future and making preparations for a grand housewarming party to thank the surprisingly but wonderfully welcoming community, El is forced to confront her feelings for Ray—the feelings that she’s been desperately trying to keep buried. Is it worth ruining a perfectly good friendship for a chance at love?

Kay (Tell Me Everything) delivers a cute queer rom-com that feels like a warm hug. Uptight Londoner Eleanor “El” Evans feels stuck in her dead-end job and tiny flatshare. She’s also hopelessly in love with Ray, her gorgeous (and totally oblivious) best friend. After Ray teases El for being overly sensible, El determines to prove herself wild, fun, and brave, and thus become the cool, sexy girl of Ray’s dreams. But drugs, alcohol, and tattoos don’t do the trick, and El is beginning to despair—until their “token straight” friend Will announces he’s inherited enough money for a down payment on a house in the countryside. And so, together with gay social-media wizard Jamie, the little found family moves into quiet village retreat Lavender House. What could be wilder, El reasons, than leaving real life behind to buy a house with her best friends? Well, maybe trying to sleep next door to the girl she can’t stop thinking about without giving herself away. Despite El’s commitment to going wild, she remains a surprisingly passive character throughout. Still, with breezy, low-stakes conflict, heaps of charming queer characters, and a happy ending for all, this proves both compulsively readable and tremendously enjoyable. Agent: Emma Finn, C&W Agency.

Abigail Hardiman's skill with voices is showcased in this queer contemporary romance audiobook. El's New Year's resolution is to try one wild thing a month. When her three closest friends purchase a fixer-upper in the country to make a (mostly) queer commune, she decides to join the venture, which ultimately has her spending more time with her best friend and crush, Ray. Narrating from El's perspective, Hardiman fully captures her personality. Hardiman's ability to portray each character's unique traits--including their place of origin--keeps listeners engaged. By appropriately emphasizing the characters' different accents, she gives each one a distinctive voice. Hardiman's performance will delight listeners and maybe inspire them to try something wild. El is stuck in a dead-end office job and suffers from unrequited love for her lesbian best friend, Ray. One day, El, Ray, and their friends Will and Jamie decide to buy a house together in a small village, leaving the city behind and creating a unique, mostly queer commune. The group works together to DIY their new home, dubbed Lavender House. As the renovation continues and plans for a welcome party come to fruition, El is forced to confront her feelings for Ray. UK author Kay's (Tell Me Everything) newest novel is a laugh-out-loud listen set in a loving queer community. Narrator Abigail Hardiman gives a nuanced performance of four young people creating the life of their dreams. Hardiman's varied, personality-filled character voices ensure listeners can easily discern who is speaking. Listeners should note that while this title is marketed as romance, the heart of the story centers on friendship and growth, not just on El and Ray's romantic relationship. VERDICT Though the romance is a bit slow to ignite, patient listeners will be rewarded with an enjoyable sizzle at the end. An excellent fit for those seeking a low-key queer romance full of fun and engaging characters.--Elyssa Everling
